Knight and Carver Yacht Center

Industrial Architecture

Knight and Carver designs, builds, and repairs large personal yachts and commercial craft. When relocating their operations to a bigger facility, they found an existing building on San Diego Bay that functioned well for their construction operations, requiring only minor modifications for code compliance. The bulk of their repair work is done outside of the building however, and the outdoor area that connected the building to the water was an undeveloped parcel with a railroad right-of-way running through its center. The involvement was unique for Architecture, J. A., Inc. because it mostly involved site work, including: paving design, drainage, runoff collection and treatment, utilities, new piers for lifting equipment, and docks. All this had to be coordinated with the railroad and their continued use of a very active rail line.
