The Chart House, Steamboat Springs

Hospitality Architecture

This restaurant is a free standing building sited on the edge of a small commercial center. Existing at the center was a bank and office building. The challenge was to design a restaurant that upheld the Chart House’s contemporary image, taking advantage of spectacular views of the ski runs, while tying it esthetically with the existing buildings that were rectilinear and of simple design. The result is a building designed like a scallop shell. The base of the shell is rectilinear with similarities to the existing center, housing the kitchen/bathroom block and entry, but the public spaces of the restaurant radiate from this area like the ribs of the shell, to take advantage of the panoramic views.
