The Marine Group has the largest private yacht hauling capacity on the west coast. When moving onto a large property on San Diego Bay, they wanted to minimize the, always increasing, environmental regulation facing boat works today. The idea was to perform as much work as possible in controlled interior work spaces, rather than outside in the weather. Architecture, J. A., Inc. was asked to design a building that could be partitioned off to accommodate a variety of specific types of work required to serve all of a yacht’s maintenance needs, as well as various types of storage and office space. We were able to help them cluster operations and, per material flow analysis, deconstruct what would have been a huge structure, into three smaller structures, better adapted to the scale of the waterfront site. The buildings were functional, inexpensive prefabricated steel buildings.
