European estates often follow a hierarchical organization where the grounds are organized and landscaped; within the garden sits a raised, balustraded plinth accommodating patios offering grand vistas, the residential structure sits on the plinth. The Residence at Bangor follows this organizational idea, as the home on a small parcel, rises above the wooded canyon to attain views of San Diego Bay and define it presence. Contemporary detailing is juxtaposed against the traditional planning. The home is small but efficiently laid out, fully accommodating the spacial needs of the owners and transferring investment from building area to detailing. A stocky tower identifies the entry on the first floor while the ground level is excavated into the canyon wall accommodates a four car garage.
